Countries are moved around the list depending on the COVID situation there – but many holiday destinations are not allowing in UK travellers, or require them to quarantine.

COVID-19: Which destinations are on green and amber lists - and which nations will let UK travellers in?

Image: UK passengers can now return from amber list countries without quarantining if they are fully vaccinated

The UK’s coronavirus travel lists are updated every three weeks by ministers who are given advice by the Joint Biosecurity Centre.

Since 19 July, people who are double vaccinated have not needed to self-isolate for 10 days when returning from amber list destinations – but those who have not had two vaccines need to.

However, some holiday destinations have their own quarantine rules so travellers may have to self-isolate there even if they do not in the UK. And countries may still be moved to different lists.

Amber list

From 19 July, UK residents who are fully vaccinated (14 days since their final dose) have not had to self-isolate when returning.

They still have to take a test three days before returning and take a PCR test on day two – but not on day eight.

Children under 18 and people who are taking part in COVID clinical trials also no longer have to self-isolate or take a day eight test.

Travellers who are not fully vaccinated must still take the pre-departure test, quarantine for 10 days on returning to the UK and take day two and day eight tests.

The government has lifted the advice to not travel to amber list countries.

Most countries are on the amber list – these are some of the main destinations for UK travellers:

The Bahamas – fully vaccinated travellers can enter, or a negative PCR test within five days before arrival is required and visitors must apply for a health visa and specific health insurance as well as taking an antigen test and completing daily health questionnaires

Belgium – UK travellers with an NHS COVID digital certificate and must quarantine until you get a negative result from a PCR test taken on day one or two. Unvaccinated people can only visit for limited reasons

Canada (green from 30 August) – most foreign nationals, including from the UK, are banned from Canada

France – fully vaccinated passengers need proof and to complete a “sworn statement” they do not have symptoms or have been in contact with somebody with symptoms within the past fortnight. Unvaccinated people can only travel for “essential reasons”

Greece (including islands) – UK travellers must have proof of either a negative PCR test within 72 hours before arrival, a negative antigen test taken within 48 hours before departure or proof of full vaccination at least 14 days before

Italy (including Vatican City) – Until 30 August, UK travellers must present a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 48 hours before arrival, self-isolate for five days and take another test to be released

Red list

All countries not on the green or amber lists are on the red list. Some amber list countries are also on a red watch list.

Thailand and Montenegro will be moved from the amber to the red list on 30 August.

Travellers going to Thailand must get permission from the Thai government first and have to isolate in a quarantine hotel for 14 days on arrival.

Montenegro requires either proof of vaccine with an NHS letter, not the app, or a negative PCR test within 72 hours before or a positive PCR test more than 14 days but less than 90 days ago.

Mexico – land borders are closed but reduced flights are running and a health declaration must be completed before arrival

Indonesia – most UK travellers are banned

Only British or Irish nationals, or people with UK residence rights, are allowed to enter the UK from red list countries – although travel to those countries is not advised.

Even if travellers have been fully vaccinated, they must take a COVID-19 PCR test before travelling, book a 10-day quarantine hotel package and complete a passenger locator form.

On arrival, they will be taken directly to the quarantine hotel and take tests on day two and day eight.
